Bond ETFs

Fixed-income exposure with equity-like tradability — and its own quirks.

Bond ETFs hold portfolios of bonds — Treasuries, corporates, municipals, high yield, or blends — and trade on-exchange like any ETF. They turned a dealer-driven, hard-to-access market into something an investor can buy in one share.

Two concepts drive bond-fund behavior: duration (sensitivity to interest rates — longer duration means bigger price moves when rates change) and credit quality (Treasury funds carry rate risk but minimal default risk; high-yield funds add meaningful credit risk). Yields shown for bond funds are usually the trailing distribution yield or the SEC yield; they are related but not identical measures.

Unlike a single bond, most bond ETFs never mature — they continuously roll holdings to maintain their target maturity range, so their value fluctuates indefinitely. Defined-maturity ('bullet') ETFs are the exception.
